Engine out then back in again! Plus Flywheel bolt tip.

After the preceding tragedy of the snapping a ring gear bolt I was left with no choice other than pulling the engine and everything in the engine bay out again - or in a fit putting The Hoff on eBay.

Sense prevailed and I extracted the engine and gubbins to get access to the snapped bolt. It took two and a half hours to get the engine out on the hoist.




Thankfully there was just enough of the pan head screw left sticking out from the flywheel to grab it in the jaws of a vice grip...



... And the offending bolt was out!


Installation tip!

Before I reinstalled the engine I made some marks on the flywheel indicating exactly where the 9 threaded holes were.



These marks on the flywheel are visible through the starter motor hole.


Which makes inserting the bolts so much less effort!



I also tried as best I could to line up the holes on the flywheel and clutch pressure plate by eye so that when the motor is back in it should need only minor turning of the crankshaft to get them all spot on. And so it did - this little trick saved an enormous amount of time and frustration.

A few hours later the engine was back I place and all bolts done up and wiring reattached along with the intake and throttle body. As they were a day before.

Bellhousing & Clutch fork removal

Removing the bellhousing from the Porsche 944 engine is not as complicated as it may seem - such as in this situation with my replacement engine. When I removed the original engine I detached it from the bellhousing in the car and removed the clutch pressure plate bolts through the starter motor hole - see my other post for details . In this case I decided to remove the clutch fork pivot shaft bolt. Begin by removing the four 17mm bellhousing bolts - you'll find that the bellhousing doesn't detach completely from the engine. It'll feel like its hooking on something. That something is the clutch fork pivot shaft inside the bellhousing. New Steering shaft bearing Nightmare removal

In my quest to tighten up the handling on the 944, I bought a new Needle Bearing from Porsche in an attempt to eliminate the fore-aft play in the steering at the top universal joint. The part number for the replacement is 477.419.059 and costs £88.86 posted from an OPC. Nothing like the effort required to actually remove the old one... I began the process by reading section 48 of Porsche Workshop manual. It appeared a simple enough process but two things bothered me: firstly, it required a chisel to remove a shear bolt (which in my limited experience never "shear"; and secondly a drill to remove two screws from the ignition lock.
